ASCETIC // AESTHETIC

By Rod Kitson

March 13-27, 2026 // The Art of Isolation, Surrey Quays, London

Welcome to my home. In this exhibition you will find more than 400 paintings which make up a life size replica of my studio flat. A jigsaw reboot of the apartment where I live, just five minutes from here.*

This is a show of two halves: on your right as you walk in is the original series made in 2018 including the sofa and the bookcase (Ascetic). Along the long wall on the left, are the paintings I did in 2025 – the kitchen, front door and hi-fi (Aesthetic).

ONE PROJECT WITH TWO SIDES

They are the same but they’re different. It is my way of measuring time and growth. A diary of moments. There is the thread of production which ties the two sides of the room together: Each piece is a constant size (1sq ft) each piece was done in a single day, and each piece loosely fits with the one next to it. All are made by looking through a viewfinder.

But the two sides reflect two different approaches. The first in 2018, (sofa, bookcase) was a rigorous plan to improve my painting skills through repetition. I did a stint of 190 days of one painting a day and when in September I stopped for a day, the project was over.
