Conceived and created in 40 minutes in early May in order to fill the space vacated by the ephemera of normality. Making a film in black and white forces the viewer to engage with the content of the film rather than the aesthetic. Shot and edited on my iPhone in my flat in Surrey Quays.

36 Creatures of Type

This film started with the ambitious idea for this year’s 36 Days of Type in which i would design and animate a looping typographical creature within a single, larger scene every day.
When the world turned upside down, work and life took precedent over this little endeavour and it almost didn’t see the light of day. I’m pleased to have found the time to finish it, I think we could all do with a little silliness right now.

'Water Boiling'

‘Water Boiling’ is a short experimental film created during lockdown shot on tape and converted for digital manipulation.
The 1:39m moving image summarises lockdown into a short mundane task, boiling a pan of water. The repetition of our days during lockdown could be comparable to watching the same tedious tasks happen over and over again.
The water that begins to boil under the pressure of the lid causes a raucous, wanting to escape out the side in spurts and bubbles. Flames roll up the pan as frustration builds but there is nothing we can do, the water must boil.
Eventually, after perhaps too long, the lid is removed by the bored water boiler, bubbles and boils leaping out, accompanied by a disturbing high frequency sound associated with emergency broadcasts on television.
The idea came during lockdown as a way to express and channel the emotional waves that we have experienced. Although having played with moving image before, this was an entirely new piece for me.

(UN)REAL PRESENCES. ANTICIPATION I

The artwork is digitally processed and modified traditional face study of classicist and intellectual Mary Beard (pencil drawing) who was a sitter at Sky Arts TV, Portrait Artist Of The Week show and was my lockdown discovery, inspiration and the found treasure. The creative process and academic drawing is a theme of my exploration on Identity. Mary Beard study of the face was a continuation of this drawing experiment. During the lockdown the act of drawing itself , confronting and connecting with the Other (‘s Face) had a healing power for me, was a ritual , part of mental hygiene and structured my isolation time. A sense of derealisation and common experience of trauma might paradoxically be a catalyst of a positive change and an emergence of a more mature society. Mary Beard is one of the possible, proposed by me positive icons of this Cultural Shift, from the Old BC (Before Corona) into a New Better Norm (World). The choice of colours was based on the Theory of Emotions.

It was a means of connecting remotely with other artists during lockdown, after actual contact became impossible. Rod drew the first slide in the series, then sent it on to another artist who added to the picture. That artist then sent it on to another artist, and so on, resulting in a final image which had grown almost out of recognition from the initial drawing.

'If these walls can talk - WIP'

Before the lockdown, I was on the verge of giving up art all together. Art was my only source of income for about 7 years and I was finding it hard to stay motivated and probably just lost my way.
With the craziness of 2020, I was in a position where I had to stay as home. Tony Robbins a well known American Author, motivation speaker said something along the lines of when you are in trouble your resort back to who you are initially.
So naturally I returned to art, because being an artist and art is what I truly live for. I am still furloughed and have not returned to work as yet. One thing I have discovered throughout this time is that I am who I am. I have to stop, criticising and hating who I am naturally. I don’t fit in to a typical mould and maybe that’s ok!
I decided to keep on producing art, and use my voice and vision to help others who doubt themselves.

The artwork is digitally processed and modified traditional face study of classicist and intellectual Mary Beard (pencil drawing) who was a sitter at Sky Arts TV, Portrait Artist Of The Week show and was my lockdown discovery, inspiration and the found treasure. The creative process and academic drawing is a theme of my exploration on Identity. Mary Beard study of the face was a continuation of this drawing experiment. During the lockdown the act of drawing itself , confronting and connecting with the Other (‘s Face) had a healing power for me, was a ritual , part of mental hygiene and structured my isolation time. A sense of derealisation and common experience of trauma might paradoxically be a catalyst of a positive change and an emergence of a more mature society. Mary Beard is one of the possible, proposed by me positive icons of this Cultural Shift, from the Old BC (Before Corona) into a New Better Norm (World). The choice of colours was based on the Theory of Emotions.

This was a project started by Rod Kitson on Instagram and eventually involved 10 artists. It was a means of connecting remotely with other artists during lockdown, after actual contact became impossible. Rod drew the first slide in the series, then sent it on to another artist who added to the picture. That artist then sent it on to another artist, and so on, resulting in a final image which had grown almost out of recognition from the initial drawing.

If these walls can talk - WIP

Before the lockdown, I was on the verge of giving up art all together. Art was my only source of income for about 7 years and I was finding it hard to stay motivated and probably just lost my way.
With the craziness of 2020, I was in a position where I had to stay as home. Tony Robbins a well known American Author, motivation speaker said something along the lines of when you are in trouble your resort back to who you are initially.
So naturally I returned to art, because being an artist and art is what I truly live for. I am still furloughed and have not returned to work as yet. One thing I have discovered throughout this time is that I am who I am. I have to stop, criticising and hating who I am naturally. I don’t fit in to a typical mould and maybe that’s ok!
I decided to keep on producing art, and use my voice and vision to help others who doubt themselves.

The 1:39m moving image summarises lockdown into a short mundane task, boiling a pan of water. The repetition of our days during lockdown could be comparable to watching the same tedious tasks happen over and over again.
The water that begins to boil under the pressure of the lid causes a raucous, wanting to escape out the side in spurts and bubbles. Flames roll up the pan as frustration builds but there is nothing we can do, the water must boil.
Eventually, after perhaps too long, the lid is removed by the bored water boiler, bubbles and boils leaping out, accompanied by a disturbing high frequency sound associated with emergency broadcasts on television.

When the world turned upside down, work and life took precedent over this little endeavour and it almost didn’t see the light of day. I’m pleased to have found the time to finish it, I think we could all do with a little silliness right now.

Water Boiling

‘Water Boiling’ is a short experimental film created during lockdown shot on tape and converted for digital manipulation.
The 1:39m moving image summarises lockdown into a short mundane task, boiling a pan of water. The repetition of our days during lockdown could be comparable to watching the same tedious tasks happen over and over again.
The water that begins to boil under the pressure of the lid causes a raucous, wanting to escape out the side in spurts and bubbles. Flames roll up the pan as frustration builds but there is nothing we can do, the water must boil.
Eventually, after perhaps too long, the lid is removed by the bored water boiler, bubbles and boils leaping out, accompanied by a disturbing high frequency sound associated with emergency broadcasts on television.
The idea came during lockdown as a way to express and channel the emotional waves that we have experienced. Although having played with moving image before, this was an entirely new piece for me.

'Chain Letter Art'

This was a project started by Rod Kitson on Instagram and eventually involved 10 artists. It was a means of connecting remotely with other artists during lockdown, after actual contact became impossible. Rod drew the first slide in the series, then sent it on to another artist who added to the picture. That artist then sent it on to another artist, and so on, resulting in a final image which had grown almost out of recognition from the initial drawing.

(UN)REAL PRESENCES. ANTICIPATION I

The artwork is digitally processed and modified traditional face study of classicist and intellectual Mary Beard (pencil drawing) who was a sitter at Sky Arts TV, Portrait Artist Of The Week show and was my lockdown discovery, inspiration and the found treasure. The creative process and academic drawing is a theme of my exploration on Identity. Mary Beard study of the face was a continuation of this drawing experiment. During the lockdown the act of drawing itself , confronting and connecting with the Other (‘s Face) had a healing power for me, was a ritual , part of mental hygiene and structured my isolation time. A sense of derealisation and common experience of trauma might paradoxically be a catalyst of a positive change and an emergence of a more mature society. Mary Beard is one of the possible, proposed by me positive icons of this Cultural Shift, from the Old BC (Before Corona) into a New Better Norm (World). The choice of colours was based on the Theory of Emotions.

'Productivity'

Conceived and created in 40 minutes in early May in order to fill the space vacated by the ephemera of normality. Making a film in black and white forces the viewer to engage with the content of the film rather than the aesthetic. Shot and edited on my iPhone in my flat in Surrey Quays.

36 Creatures of Type

This film started with the ambitious idea for this year’s 36 Days of Type in which i would design and animate a looping typographical creature within a single, larger scene every day.
When the world turned upside down, work and life took precedent over this little endeavour and it almost didn’t see the light of day. I’m pleased to have found the time to finish it, I think we could all do with a little silliness right now.

If these walls can talk - WIP

Before the lockdown, I was on the verge of giving up art all together. Art was my only source of income for about 7 years and I was finding it hard to stay motivated and probably just lost my way.
With the craziness of 2020, I was in a position where I had to stay as home. Tony Robbins a well known American Author, motivation speaker said something along the lines of when you are in trouble your resort back to who you are initially.
So naturally I returned to art, because being an artist and art is what I truly live for. I am still furloughed and have not returned to work as yet. One thing I have discovered throughout this time is that I am who I am. I have to stop, criticising and hating who I am naturally. I don’t fit in to a typical mould and maybe that’s ok!
I decided to keep on producing art, and use my voice and vision to help others who doubt themselves.
